Evolving Egg III

H. 24" x D. 4"; Huon pine, ebony, linen thread, dog hair
Many of my works are concerned with natural phenomena especially those involving the themes of fertility and metamorphosis. Evolving Egg III is such a piece. Combining huon pine, ebony, linen thread and dog hair it has a whimsical appeal. My intention, however, was to reflect/symbolize the delicate balance in the laws of survival that effect the evolution of life as we know it. To meet the Challenge V I have made it the tallest lidded form I have ever turned with the longest spinal tail I have ever carved. The real challenge was to excentuate and capture the imagery of growth in transformation and still keep the piece visually balanced and physically strong. As a finished piece it has inspired me to go on to even greater heights with my work.<Challenge V
