AAW Profile
David Bender Moves On!
After three years and evolving roles at the Wood Turning Center, David James Bender moved on in July 2008. Hired soon after earning his Industrial Arts degree, “Bender” brought invaluable diverse skills to this nonprofit organization. He assisted administrators and managers with everything, and learned millions of additional skills on the job. His proficient graphic design skills emerged in signage, Turning Points, announcements, mailings, and at www.woodturningcenter.org. Bender and brother and webmaster, Andrew Bender, worked together to produce this evolving site. At the same time, Bender coordinated our print magazine, Turning Points, and worked with long-time editor Terry Martin of Australia. Bender also oversaw computer systems, upgrades, lighting for exhibits, and facility needs - so invisible yet so crucial in a public art gallery and museum. Eventually, he designed and managed the transition of Turning Points into an electronic communication vehicle. Bender was the perfect candidate to manage events and the facility of the newly formed Philadelphia Center for Architecture, in conjunction with the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In helping the Wood Turning Center grow, Bender developed his next set of very professional skills. We wish him well and look forward to all his future successes. Thanks for everything, Bender !

At The Center
allTURNatives: Form & Spirit 2008
Through September 13, 2008
Through June and July, 8 international residents participated in the Center's International Turning Exchange residency. They lived and worked together in rented space at the University of the Arts. Their cultural backgrounds in Germany, Japan, New Zealand and the US resulted in splendid works in wood, glass, paintings and two videos. The galleries were packed on opening night, and the purchases were lively.

On To The Future
Wood Turning Center at John Grass Wood Turning Company
The Wood Turning Center’s Board of Trustees and staff have thoroughly studied the feasibility of preserving an historic wood turning shop building as the next exciting home for the Center. This would combine a working historic wood turning shop with contemporary exhibits showing the historical continuum and breadth of this art form. Continued
