Mark Lindquist: Millennial Mysteries 1990-2000

October 3, 2003 to November 27, 2003

an exhibition celebrating the donation
of three Lindquist sculptures to three museums

from the Gary and Suzette Rogers Collection

Philadelphia, PA: The Wood Turning Center presents an exhibition of three significant sculptures by contemporary wood turning pioneer, Mark Lindquist, who will attend the opening on the evening of October 3, 2003. A gallery talk by the artist and the donors will occur at the Center during the reception, which starts at 6:30 p.m and is open to the public.

Ken Trapp, curator-in-charge of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, says of Lindquist's career:

"In the early 1970s, Mark Lindquist’s exploration of Japanese ceramic traditions and modern sculptural ideals through the medium of woodturning elevated this traditional craft into an art form expressive of the cultural and ideological developments of the times. He continues to transcend the ever-expanding limits of woodturning, adding to the richness of the discourse within this significant American art movement."

Lindquist says of these works, which were created in the 1990s, "These three sculptures deal with special issues regarding process and journey in making art. In each piece, there are specific trademarks of my past works, which are important to me, such as mistakes (which lead to innovation of new technique); imperfections, which symbolize the nature of the material; and the rough or natural edge, which allows us to glimpse the past or history of (our own) nature.

The sculptures will be on display at the Wood Turning Center from October 3 to November 27. Upon the completion of the exhibition, the pieces will be installed in their new permanent homes:

Returning Prodigal to the Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, AR
Ancient Archeological Captive to the Wood Turning Center, Philadelphia, PA
Post Volute/Pre-Chaotic Column to the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, DE
