Oceanic Angel
ITE
14 x 24"
Walnut, pigments

This work was conceived initially from whale vertibrae sometimes found on the isolated beaches of the southern coast of New Zealand. As the idea was pushed around in sketches and models, I began to see parallels in forms such as paddles, flippers, axe heads, wings, rifle butts, etc. These ideas were allowed to develop into an animated vessel—like object with an internal cavity carrying a central member, not unlike a spine. The outer surface of the larger section relates to the surface of brain coral. The wing section and nose surfaces are a reflection of the age old human passion for decorating and personalizing weaponry and tools.
Silken Snare
ITE
3 x 6"
Walnut, pigments

Silken Snare was initially conceived as a partially peeled fruit with its internal structure semi-exposed. As the idea progressed, the image of a spider web/nursery manifested itself. This is probably a result of a weekend excursion to Ringing Rocks with the other members of the ITE crew and Robert Ellsworth (an accommodating friend and local) around the time the work was being produced, where a remarkable spider nursery was found. In Papua New Guinea spider web has been used in a number of ways as a sculptural medium, though not as a subject. The handling of incisions inlaid with pigment has its origins art from this area.
