Drunken Vessel
ITE
5 x 10"
Maple
MS10

Another of the early pieces, using weathered wood which I found lying outside the woodshop. I call it drunken because it won’t stand still when you rock it!!
Erosion Series #15
ITE
3 x 14"
Maple burl
MS11

Palmer Sharpless bought this piece of burl from the Charlotte seminar to give me because I was having trouble finding any burl timber in this area. I like the crumbling honeycomb edges. I’m inspired by the myriad rock formations I see on my travels.
Ceremonial Vessel
ITE
22 x 18"
Walnut, elm and brass
MS01

This came about as I wanted to make a composition of pieces with various decorative elements. Resolving those elements into a unified whole was difficult, but I’m happy with the piece.
Honeycomb pot
ITE
5 _ x 8 _"
Elm, rust
MS09

This came about as I was looking for a suitable vehicle upon which to experiment with a rust-effect treatment.
Landscape Series
Pre ITE
5 x 12"
Oak burl, dyed and sandblasted
MS16

One of a series of pieces where the form, texture and color speak of landscape.
Tracks #1
ITE
7 x 8"
Maple burl
MS07

I was given this piece of maple burl by Ed Ryan at the Bucks County Woodturners meeting with a proviso that I "do something good with this"!! Well, I turned a hollow pot form and then just left it—the wood was too interesting to add anything, but without some other creative input it would be just another hollow form in some pretty wood! So I was playing around with these burnt-in dots a few days later and decided to try it on this piece. Following the edges of natural hollows and crevices led me down a whole new series of contexts around pathways, making marks in the landscape (a la Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Long, two fellow countrymen whose work I greatly admire) and my own experiences of following paths on maps on the many walking trips I engage in. It also has a feeling of stitched leather…
Cube #5
ITE
6 x 6 x 6"
Ash, scorched
MS06

Continuing my series of cubes, this one has a trompe l’oeil effect, with the juxtaposition of ball/hole in the center.
Moeraki
ITE
7 x 8"
Maple
MS12

I made this piece in response to seeing images of huge round boulders on the South East Pacific coast of Otago in New Zealand. They were the most awesome boulders I have ever seen.
Fluted Vessel Series #21
Pre ITE
4 x 12"
Ash
MS15

One of a series of fluted and segmented pieces I’ve been working on over the past few years. The voids allow light to penetrate into the interior, as well as casting interesting shadows. Scorching emphasizes the form and gives a soft sheen to the grain pattern.
Tracks II
ITE
9 x 8"
Maple, bleached
MS08

This follows on from the previous piece. I prepared a rounded pot form and bleached the surface ready for decoration and then just followed my instincts around the piece as I went on my travels!!
Chasm
ITE
9 x 19"
Elm
MS03

During the early stages of ITE, I was struggling to find timber suitable for the ideas I wanted to express, so I decided to use a rather dilapidated lump of elm that was lying about outside the workshop. I was particularly attracted to the grey weathering and heavy checking on the top surface, so I exploited that with burning and burnishing. I like the way this piece sits.

Walnut
MS04

We were lucky to be given some splendid walnut logs by Bill Hilgendorf, and I liked this piece so much I decided to leave it as a simple polished shallow form. However, the bottom of the piece started checking, so I cut it out, textured it and re-assembled the piece with the inclusion of legs to give it lift.
Torso
ITE
17 x 17 x 7"
Ash, gold ring
MS02

This piece resulted from cutting some ash logs in the woods on the George School grounds. I spotted a piece of crotch woo (where the trunk branches out into two) and thought it would be fun to play with. Hollowing out the front of this piece in approximately the belly-button area created a whole set of interesting possibilities and meanings, which I wasn’t really ready to deal with, so when I textured the ‘legs’ with a honeycomb pattern and dyed it red, the whole piece resonated with controversy!! The addition of a gold ring as a suggestion of body piercing was the final dramatic conclusion to a piece that had started out as a bit of fun!!
Segmented Vessel
Pre ITE
4 x 9"
Ash, perforated steel tube
MS14

One of a series of fluted and segmented pieces I’ve been working on over the past few years. The voids allow light to penetrate into the interior, as well as casting interesting shadows. Scorching emphasizes the form and gives a soft sheen to the grain pattern.

UFO Series IV
ITE
8 _ x 12 _"
Walnut, stainless steel strainers
MS05

This is another in a series loosely based on UFO shapes. I’ve enjoyed employing this honeycomb texture with color.
UFO Series III
ITE
4 x 9"
Walnut
MS13

This was the first piece I worked on—I wanted to try my hand at some carving, and this was the result.
