I am a self-taught artist having chosen wood turning as my field seven years ago. I have worked, for the most part, in isolation. Currently, I work with a few gouges and a chainsaw in a small studio. I like to work big and I am using the ITE opportunity to explore work at a scale beyond the capabilities of my home shop and tools.
I am fascinated by the ways wood interacts with tools. I explore various combinations of surfaces, shapes and grain patterns to create things beautiful and powerful.
I am exploring texture. Texture, texture and more texture. My current stock of gouges and cutters is somewhat limiting. ITE is providing me an opportunity to use a wider range of equipment.
I have developed a number of textures using deep-fluted gouges, including the spiral texture. I will also be exploring new finishes for wood. I especially like to work with green wood, because of its tendency to warp and crack. I was drawn to green wood at first because it was readily available.
I take an intuitive and spontaneous approach to my work. The action of shaping the wood with my hand-held tools is satisfying in a very basic way. As I work with the wood, I collaborate with it. The wood has a voice, and I have a voice; we interact. The finished piece illustrates that interplay.
Below is a gallery of my recent work. Most is available through galleries. Contact me for information. You can see me in action at ITE or visit my personal website <www.circlefactory.com>.
