Artist's Statement:
Mark Hancock
Lathe artist, Wales

I came to the ITE with the idea of developing my work whilst trying to keep it's identity. I planned on focusing on particular aspects of my work and different ways of presenting it. What happened exceeded my expectations.

Through exposure to contemporary crafts, museums and collections, as well as the constant collaborative nature of the overall experience I gained a better insight about my own work.

I feel extremely fortunate to have been a part of this year's residency. The friendship, enthusiasm and energy within the group was infectious, producing a challenging, exciting and fun time both in the studio and out.

Seeing the different approaches my fellow residents used in their work has changed my own approach. I have always worked intuitively. I know I will continue to work in this way, but the limitations of the lathe have been removed and I am responding more spontaneously to ideas and external stimuli.

"An Eye For An Eye…" is an expression of my confused thoughts about the world we have created. On one hand our world feels more open and accessible. This is epitomized within the international turning community. In juxtaposition there appears to be a desire to define and classify boundaries by nationality, race and creed with the consequential conflicts that ensue.

"He Wouldn't Listen" is a more whimsical approach to the thoughts expressed by "An Eye For An Eye…" The form is inspired by a news report on a controversial genetic issue. Both of these I see as part of series for future work.
