Kevin Burrus
Lathe artist, USA
The ITE residency gave me time to listen to my mind and the visual ideas and pictures - this then allowed me to feel confident in the pieces I made and the ideas that came up.
Being immersed in the woodturning community gave me a chance to learn and challenge the idea of turning and what that represents. This came out in the series of spindles that I made. They are square blocks of wood that have been sanded and painted on the lathe. The end result is a painting on all four sides - each side has the same formal qualities, all made by the lathe. These paintings harness the movement and aggression that makes a block of wood into a cylinder. Every spindle has the mark of the lathe at the ends. These eight spindles are the first of a series of a hundred that I would eventually like to exhibit together.
