Artist's Statement:
Thierry Martenon
Lathe artist, France

Preparing to participate in the ITE was a stressful experience for me. I was concerned that my abilities as an artist were not good enough or if I would be capable of new ideas, etc … but this experience has been wonderful.

The energy produced by this group, in our “magic workshop,” the sharing of ideas, various techniques and know-how have been at the heart of what made this experience so great. It enabled me to progress in my own work.

All of the work I created during the ITE has been influenced by the other residents as well as the objects I have seen in private collections and museums. It has also been influenced by simply living in the United States and, primarily, Philadelphia, for the first time.

“Give a Dog a Bone” represents a return to my aesthetic process – a process I call ‘’Primitif Contemporain (Contemporary Primitive).” More precisely, it is my attempt to find a link, a relationship, between primitive textures and contemporary design. By inlaying bone, I am reinforcing the piece’s primitive character.

My work is indicative of the saying “less is more.” This is evident in the pieces “Duolithe” and “Stairway to Heaven.” I’ve attempted to connect the primary materials of slate and wood in a way which reinforces its primitive character in a way which makes my pieces timeless.

Thanks, once again, to the other residents for making the residency so much fun. I would like to also offer a big thank you to the Wood Turning Center.
