Artist's Statement:
Ron Kanter
Photojournalist/Videographer, USA

As the Resident Filmmaker and Photojournalist for the 2003 International Turning Exchange, I had the pleasure of sharing eight weeks with five of the best artists in the world. It was a great ride – funny, surprising, inspiring. Although it is way too soon to realize how the experience will affect me and be reflected in my films, I know for certain that the effect will be significant and long lasting.

The video that accompanies this show does not attempt to capture the other artists’ ITE experience. How can you show changes that haven’t even been recognized? How do you show a new direction that is still unexplored? How could I be a professional observer and committed participant at the same time?

I chose to be a participant as much as possible. I turned two ordinary bowls that made me unreasonably happy. I drank more beer than I wanted, stayed up later than I should have, and made friends with five guys I will never forget.

But I am still a filmmaker and that means I see things most clearly through my camera. So I recorded images of life in the woodshop – the magic of a gouge transforming wood; the intensity of hands guiding a chisel, and, most importantly, the simple, repetitive, purposeful, movements that are the making of art.

The video is not a traditional, narrative documentary. It is just images that I hope will provide a little context for the work that is in this exhibition and the art that is yet to be imagined.
